Welcome to Shoresh
home of the Jewish girls of Gibraltar

A few questions people ask about Shoresh...
What is Shoresh?
Shoresh (meaning "Root") is a new organisation that was set up by the girls in Gibraltar, for the girls in Gibraltar. A "grassroots" organisation, if you will...

Who runs Shoresh?
Shoresh is run by Madrichot (girls in the top two years of high school) under the guidance of a few post-Sem girls and other helpers.
Shoresh is under the umbrella of the Managing Board of the Jewish Community (MBJC).
Who is Shoresh for?
All Jewish girls of high school age in Gibraltar are welcome.
I've never heard of Shoresh - is it new?
Shoresh was created from scratch in February 2015, so yes. It will take time till everyone's heard of it!
Is Shoresh part of a larger organisation elsewhere in the world?
No. Made by Gibs, for Gibs.
Although we like to think we're part of the Jewish People.
Why is it called "Shoresh"?
It means "Root", to remind us to return to our "roots" (keep the Torah) and to indicate that it's a "grassroots" movement (it's run by young girls like you).
It also might be hinting that "Shoresh" is the "root" - the foundation - of the rest of your Torah life. Shoresh seeks to create an environment of fun-filled and informative Torah living that forms a strong foundation of Torah in later late.
If you want to get deep, you could also suggest that the Torah is called a "Tree" ("etz haim hi"), and a person also called a "Tree" ("ki adam etz hasadeh")...
Who designed that logo?
As with everything Shoresh, the Madrichot arranged it and chose it from a few possible contenders.
What is the point of Shoresh?
Shoresh aims to "educate, enthuse and inspire Gibraltarian Jewish girls in all matters relating to Avodat HaShem".
Obviously, the schools in Gibraltar do an important job in academic education (and sometimes beyond the classroom).
But, like thousands of Jewish communities around the world, Gibraltar now benefits from a religious youth organisation led by young role models who teach without speaking.
This all sounds lovely, but what can I actually do?
Good question! Visit our Events page to see what's going on at the moment!
